Bat

A bat listened to Paranoid by Black Sabbath and started thinking everything was stalking it: the glass eye of a full moon, bushy eyebrows of clouds, curious fox cubs making a den out of a dumped washing machine, streetlights fizzing as it flew past, buses heavy like loaded oxen from their passenger's dreams, the unpeopled streets dizzy from listening to the night's monologue. The bat was only half-right— something else was stalking the same frequencies it chatted on: the quiet songs of heartbreak.
